Indigenous Money Mentor

Supporting Indigenous Communities on the Northern Rivers

Lismore Neighbourhood Centre is proud to have employed Australia's first Indigenous indigenous money mentor logomoney mentor (IMM) of Aboriginal descent. As one of six Indigenous money mentors across Australia, this position funded through the NAB's Reconciliation Action Plan. The IMM outreaches to Indigenous communities in the Northern Rivers Region.

The IMM talks with people about finances and budgeting and refers people to the appropriate services. It encourages people to open up and look into their finances and where they are at. IMM can provide referrals and advocacy where appropriate to the Financial Counselling Service and local housing services.

Clients have the opportunity to have confidential, one-on-one appointments where they can discuss any financial issues they are having. The IMM can help people who may be having difficulties with mobile phone contracts or predatory rental companies. Assistance can also be gained in accessing No Interest or StepUp Loans; or with credit card or budgeting issues.

If you are having a marriage breakdown or want to talk about child support issues, come and see the IMM. The IMM can assist or refer you in the right direction with anything to do with finances, like repossession, bankruptcy and real estate and tenancy issues, such as if they fall behind on rent or mortgages.
