Friday 28 March 2014
Facilitated by Paulette Bray-Narai
This whole day course is a practical mental health development workshop for volunteers and workers without accredited counselling knowledge, who may find themselves stepping into an accidental counsellor role. Anyone may find themselves in a “counselling” role by accident. This can occur as a result of issues or requests for help that arise from contact with people in the normal day-to-day duties community sector volunteers and workers may find themselves in. It can be difficult to know what to do or say when approached by someone who is anxious or in distress. This situation can be difficult and overwhelming to deal with.
The focus of this introductory course is to provide participants with a framework with which to respond when having to step into an accidental counsellor role in the workplace. Irrespective of the cause of the distress it is important to know how to respond empathetically and appropriately. This full one day interactive course will introduce the participant to a variety of methods non-counsellors can employ, from non-judgmental listening to the best practice methods of how to appropriately respond.
